The Challenge of Grief: A Video Documentary

A one-hour documentary video featuring Elizabeth Harper Neeld and Seven Choices, funded by the Design Industries Foundation For AIDS, Houston, produced by Public Television, and shown on PBS stations throughout the United States. While focusing on grief and AIDS, this documentary is applicable to all people experiencing any kind of change, grief, or loss.

Dr. Elizabeth Harper Neeld explains the life-affirming choices that every individual can make to find a new balance in life after loss and change. Taking the change process step by step, she describes the clusters of experiences, thoughts, and challenges that are part of the adaptation cycle when loss and change have shattered the shape of our lives. 

Using her own experience the sudden death of her young husband, job change, loss of other family members and the experiences of seventy other individuals, she tells stories of successful and unsuccessful responses to loss. Some people, Dr. Neeld reports, eventually find a new verve for living while others stay stuck forever in their cycle of grief. This video illustrates the choices of behaviors, thoughts, and attitudes that support us in moving through the change process to a new life that includes the loss but is not identified by that loss.

This documentary includes interviews with many individuals whose lives have been affected by AIDS. The documentary also contains interviews with a young couple whose child was stillborn, an elderly man who has a debilitating kidney disease, a hospice administrator, a therapist who worked extensively with people who are experiencing losses and changes of all types.
